A day here is mostly outdoors

We planned the compound around the hours you actually live in it — not the drive home, but the walk to the water and the coffee after Maghrib.

The mornings

The courtyard belongs to the early risers

Every home opens onto a garden courtyard, and every courtyard onto the water. Slip down for a swim before the heat, loop the oval, and be back before the kettle finishes.

The evenings

The majlis never really closes

After Maghrib the pergolas fill with cardamom coffee and half-finished conversations. There is a shaded majlis in every neighbourhood, and it is understood that the seat beside you is for whoever wanders over.

The green

The children own the middle

Cars stop at the edge of Hayy; the heart of it is a car-free spine of lawns, play mounds, and date palms. Parents let go of a hand at the door and pick it up again at dinner.

A day in Hayy

From the first loop of the oval to the last cup in the majlis — the rhythm most days settle into.

  1. 6:40 AM

    Sunrise on the oval

The walking loop is busiest before the heat — strollers, joggers, and the qahwa cart warming up.

  2. 7:15 AM

    First laps at the pool

The courtyard pool opens at dawn. Lanes for the swimmers, a shallow end for the small ones.

  3. 8:30 AM

    School walk down the spine

The car-free spine carries everyone to the gate on foot — no drop-off queue, no engines idling.

  4. 1:00 PM

    Friday plates on the lawn

The amphitheatre lawn turns into one long table — every household brings a dish, nobody brings a car.

  5. 5:00 PM

    Cardamom coffee in the majlis

The pergolas fill up as the shade lengthens. The dallah goes around, and the day slows to a conversation.

  6. 8:30 PM

    Evening on the green

Bikes, footballs, and the last light. The gatehouse keeps watch so the middle stays the children’s.

My daughter walked to her friend’s house alone for the first time here. That is the whole pitch.
